Food Insecurity Map of Rural India
Abstract
This food insecurity map of rural India is based on the indicators of food availability, food access and food absorption which have been consolidated into a single map (see separate maps for food availability, food access and food absorption). Nineteen indicators are used: five for food availability, eight for food access and six for food absorption. the food insecurity map gives an overall picture of food security in India. It is useful as an advocacy and awareness-building tool, and for making broad comparisons. However, for greater understanding of the food insecurity situation and the specific problems in each state, it is necessary to look at the tables of indicators. An examination of the indicators shows that these are not always average figures for a particular state. Several of them refer to the most vulnerable sections of the population within states. The food insecurity map highlights situations that require specific attention and policy interventions.
